The Extinction of Honey

While walking toward you,

for what was the last time,

I came across a swarm of bees

in the middle of an intersection.

I stood in awe of the buzzing,

honey spilled from my eyes.

I knew it could not last,

this sweetness between us,

it was always going to sting.

meanwhile i’m hungry

but not going to eat

smoke instead probably

maybe snack

gotta switch my laundry

washer to dryer

i could say bad morning

& mean

i woke up

not in love again

plus it’s only 10:53 a.m.

so i vacuum the stairs

take out the recycling

drink a coffee on the steps

listen to a podcast

fit the sheets to the bed

collect the littered bottles

of hand sanitizer

& arrange them by the door

my stomach growls

i scroll twitter for the news

the day’s death count

my anxiety needs to know

to remind me

to be prepared

people die

at any given moment

people get sick

get in car accidents

mothers get 5.6 cm aortic aneurysms

that could spontaneously burst

i wash the dishes

dry the dishes

wipe counters down

maybe i am going to eat

boil a pot of water for oatmeal

salt the water when it boils

because i know i am supposed to

when i think about my mother dying

i know i am supposed to

distract myself with a physical act

like cooking or cleaning

& as of late

my house is spotless
